The history of Black baseball and the growth of the Negro Leagues beginning with the segregation of the game in the 19th century will be explored in this class. The story will continue through the demise of the leagues in the 1950s and will include some key topics of discussion. Among these will be segregation, life on the road, barnstorming, the creation of professional leagues, and the roads to integration and decline.

Leslie Heaphy
Dr. Leslie Heaphy is an Associate Professor of History at Kent State University at Stark. She has authored numerous articles and books on the history of the Negro leagues and women’s baseball. Heaphy currently chairs the Jerry Malloy Negro League conference for the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). She is also the President of the Board for the International Women’s Baseball Center.
