The bitter fighting on and around the island of Guadalcanal in 1942 represented the beginning of the land-sea campaign against Japan in World War II. In the beginning, American forces--mostly Marines--were not yet fully prepared for the challenges they would face. Severe losses on land and sea ensued. However, the Navy eventually dominated the sea lanes, and the Marines (supported by Army units) eventually controlled the island. It was a bloody introduction to the war that would follow.

Bruce Zellers
Since 1983, Bruce Zellers has taught history at Greenhills School in Ann Arbor and has taught at Oakland University for more than 20 years. His interests widely range in American history, and he frequently lectures on topics ranging from the Colonial Era to the present day. Zellers has a particular interest in American military history, and his book reviews in this field have appeared in The Journal of Military History, The Michigan War Studies Review, and other publications.
