The region of Kashmir in India (officially, the state of Jammu and Kashmir) has had a contested history since the country’s independence in 1947. Divided into two sections, the class offers a brief history and background to the current socio-political landscape in Kashmir followed by a discussion of the idea of Kashmiriyat, a vision of religious and cultural coexistence that traces its roots to 14th-15th century spiritual thinkers. This approach potentially presents a model for addressing similar schisms in other parts of the world, including the United States.

Pradeep Sopory
Pradeep Sopory was born and grew up in the Kashmir valley of the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. He completed his schooling and higher education in Kashmir and has remained closely engaged with the region’s political and social developments. Sopory holds a Ph.D. in Communication and conducts research on health, risk, and science communication at Wayne State University.
