Julianne Moore (as Cathy Whitaker), Dennis Quaid (as Frank Whitaker), & Dennis Haysbert (as Raymond Deagan), Patricia Clarkson (as Eleanor Fine) and Viola Davis (as Sybil). The film is set in 1957 in Hartford Connecticut. Initially presented as an ideal couple (‘Mr. & Mrs. Magnatech’), the Whitakers are about to confront two culturally explosive taboos boiling beneath this seemingly idyllically-filmed setting: Frank’s homosexuality and Cathy’s attraction to Raymond, the son of the Whitaker’s now deceased gardener. Is it possible for Hartford (or America) to struggle to become aware of and overcome it’s homophobia and racism?
