F2614 Illustrated History of the Soo Locks

This class takes a deep dive into historic photos dating back to the 1860s to review the construction of the eight locks built on the St. Mary’s River linking Lake Superior with the lower Great Lakes. In addition to sharing construction details, Briggs puts them into the context of world and U.S. events. This class also includes an update on the 9th navigation lock currently being built.

Michelle Briggs
Michelle Briggs has worked as the Chief Park Ranger at the Soo Locks since 2009. Prior to this position she completed a master’s degree focused on Museum Studies and Great Lakes Maritime History and worked in museums throughout the Midwest. A native Michigander and self-described “boat nerd,” Briggs leads interpretation efforts, researches, and designs exhibits.
