Highlighting both local and international efforts this class focuses on the Detroit Zoo’s Amphibian Conservation programs,. Participants will learn about the care and husbandry of amphibians—frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders—while exploring the critical conservation work underway to protect these species. With over half of all amphibians at risk of extinction, the Detroit Zoo plays a vital role in preserving their populations and habitats, both in the wild and through educational initiatives that raise awareness of these remarkable and threatened animals.

Mark Vassallo is the Curator of Amphibians at the Detroit Zoo and has been working professionally in the field for over 15 years. He earned his degree in Zoology from Northern Michigan University. Vassallo has always had a passion for the outdoors and the biodiversity found throughout the natural world.
