Opened in 1921, the Detroit Public Library on Woodward Avenue stands as a remarkable architectural and artistic landmark. This class explores the vision behind the building, focusing on architect Cass Gilbert and the noted artists and artisans who shaped its interior, including Gary Melchers and Mary Chase Perry Stratton. Participants will also learn about other significant projects these creatives produced throughout their influential careers, gaining deeper insight into their lasting impact on American architecture and art.
Hybrid (In-person with a Zoom option)
This class is part of the Lewis “Skip” and Beverly Siegel Art and Exploration Experience. Made possible through a generous gift from the Siegel estate, SOAR members will have an opportunity to learn about a topic and then get out and explore it. This class is paired with a tour of the Detroit Public Library main branch. Separate registration for the trip is required.
