This presentation focuses on the mental illnesses of U.S presidents. Many presidents suffered from psychiatric disorders, including major depression, alcoholism, bipolar disorder, and dementia. Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, and Calvin Coolidge are among a number of presidents who had psychiatric disorders. U.S presidents are frequently required to make decisions that have dramatic and consequential effects. We will explore the impact these disorders may have had on the course of history.

Sidney Heisler MD provided psychiatric care for many years to patients in Michigan. Now retired, he has more time to enjoy his lifelong avocation as a history buff. Researching mental illness in the White House gave him the opportunity to use his clinical background to further understand the psyche and the Presidency.
