The story of salt in Detroit began some 400 million years ago and continues into the present day. This story of earth, snow, and salt will tell the story of our world...and its need for salt. The class focuses on the history of salt in Detroit, Michigan. Topics explored will involve the geology, geography, and demography of this area as well as a discussion of mining, minerals, and materials that relate to salt.

George Davis

George Davis is the current Director of Security, Public Safety, and Real Estate at the Detroit Salt Company (DSC), owners and operators of the historic Detroit Salt Mine. He directs the public affairs portfolio comprised of government relations, community relations, and media relations. The public safety group he leads handles DSC’s relationships with local law enforcement and fire officials, its Corporate Security teams, and Homeland Security. Certified as a professional miner through the U.S. Department of Labor. George is one very few African American mining executives in the United States.
