American Indians and Route 66

This class will explore the historical and cultural impact of Route 66 on the Cherokee Nation, highlighting its significance in shaping the region's identity. The efforts of the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association (AIANTA) to promote Indigenous tourism through two Route 66 Familiarization (FAM) Tours in 2025 will be discussed, and the presentation will emphasize collaboration and sustainable tourism to support cultural preservation and economic growth.
Travis Owens
For almost two decades, Travis Owens has been dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history and culture of Cherokee people. As vice president of Cultural Tourism, Owens oversees all of the Cherokee Nation's cultural tourism offerings, which includes a robust portfolio of museums, cultural collections, welcome centers, gift shops, the newly developed Cherokee National Research Center, and a number of award-winning cultural events.
