This class will explore various African instruments from their traditional origin, their journey into the African Diaspora, and their emergence in popular American music. The class will be a lecture/demonstration that focuses on the African sensibilities and musical instruments that were retained and/or recreated by enslaved Africans in the African Diaspora.

Chike, Kefentse

Kefentse Chike has served the Detroit community for more than three decades as a community activist, “Drum-lorist,” and college lecturer. Chike has studied with expert musicians in Africa and throughout the African Diaspora. He is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of African American Studies at Wayne State University and performs with various bands and musical ensembles in Metropolitan Detroit.
