SP2418 Understanding Addiction

This class will review the etiology of addiction, including the criteria for substance use disorder, signs and symptoms, family dynamics, and hope in recovery. Evidence-based practice and treatment options will be discussed and evaluated. The current methodology of assessment, using a biopsychosocial approach, will be addressed, as well as spirituality, cultural, and ethnicity factors associated with substance use disorder. Participants will leave the class with a better understanding of the disease concept, the impact of the brain changes as a result of addiction, and the societal impact of addiction.
Chris Nixon
Chris Nixon is a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC), graduating from Michigan State University with a masters in social work in 1990. Nixon is the current Administrative Director for Maplegrove Center and Addiction Medicine at Henry Ford Health Systems. A survivor of addiction, having grown up in an alcoholic family, Nixon is mission-driven, serving local communities and those who suffer from addiction. Having a passion for the treatment of addiction, Nixon is committed to spreading a message of hope and effectiveness through awareness.
