Learning sign language ASL is thought to have originated in the American School for the Deaf (ASD), founded in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817. Originally known as The American Asylum, At Hartford, For The Education And Instruction Of The Deaf And Dumb, the school was founded by the Yale graduate and divinity student Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.

Join our instructor as you explore the world and culture of the hearing impaired. This course offers instruction for the beginner and beyond to learn or build upon the skills you may already have for communication. You will find yourself signing to and with others before you know it.

  • The suggested support material is Bravo ASL Curriculem Student Work Book. This book can be purchased online through any retailer or purchased first night of class for $10.00 (cash or check) made out to JCPS Adult & Continuing Education.
