Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: Overview, Treatment and Resources

This course will offer an overview of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): its symptoms, the prevalence of trauma and the risk factors for developing it. We will then review the most effective treatments including psychotherapies and medications. Finally, we will focus on available resources for those with PTSD and their families, and how to build resilience.
Nancy Bernardy
Nancy Bernardy is a clinical psychologist who retired from the National Center for PTSD at the White River Junction, VT, VA Medical Center. She also was an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. Dr. Bernardy’s research focused on improving access to effective PTSD treatments in rural hospital settings, and her educational work centered on offering information to primary care providers regarding the most effective ways to treat PTSD, including a specific focus on medications. After the Iraq War began, she worked for the Department of Defense in Germany and the Netherlands treating returning military members from Iraq and Afghanistan. She has authored or co-authored over 40 publications and enjoys continuing to provide information to the public on PTSD.
