Drawing in Colored Pencil with Marisa Stratton

In this course, students will learn the basics of working in color with colored pencil. Often overlooked, colored pencils are versatile, accessible, and affordable tools for building color theory knowledge. The skills shared in the class will be easily transferable to all color media, especially oil painting. All levels of ability are welcome, I will adapt for the needs of each student.
In this course, students will gain an understanding of color theory and optical mixing through small-scale projects and exercises with colored pencil. We will begin working with limited palettes (2-3 colors) to describe simple subject matter (still life) and slowly progress to a full color palette (10+ colors) to capture complex subject matter (figure/portrait). We will be working primarily from still life and photographic reference. Emphasis will be placed on observational drawing skills, expressive mark-making and color relationships.
By the end of this course, students will have strengthened their draftsmanship, color theory knowledge, and mark-making confidence. The course will culminate in a final drawing depicting students’ own choice of subject matter.
