Introduction to Painting C with Milena Spasic

Introduction to Painting C is one of three Introduction to Painting classes that build on one another and may be taken out of sequence. Each level of Intro to Painting (A, B, and C) focuses on different color schemes. After completion of all three levels, students will have an expanded vocabulary of color mixtures which will equip them to transfer into Intermediate Painting. Students will work from observation (still life and landscape) and collage/sketches. This class will implement a color-mixing method unique to the Washington Studio School. Students will also be exposed to art references, both historical and contemporary.

Gain knowledge of ala prima painting.
Build a vocabulary pertinent to painting and engage in group discussions.
Who is this class for: This class is the last of the Introduction to Painting series. Ideally, students taking level C will have taken level B & A prior, but can take this class nonetheless if they are new to painting. IT IS STRONGLY recommended that students have some drawing experience before taking any painting class. All three courses must be completed for the Foundation Certificate Program.

You may use either oil or acrylic paint, however oil is recommended. If you are unsure whether to work with oil paint or acrylic, I strongly recommend oil paint. Working with acrylic requires constantmanagement of the paint to prevent it from drying on the palette, which to a beginning
student is often a daunting and distracting task.
Paints required:
Hansa Yellow Light, Hansa Yellow Medium, Yellow Ochre, Napthol Red, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber, Viridian, Ultramarine Blue, Pthalo blue (small tubes), Titanium White (large tube)
Other supplies:
Metal palette knife, trowel-shaped that comes to a point - no rounded tips please.
16”x 20” disposable white paper palette, or glass palette.
Long handle hog bristle brushes*: Bright or Flat only #2, #4 #6, #8 and #10. Quantity 2 of the #6, and #8.
*Acrylic painters please select nylon synthetic brushes of the same type and size as above.
4 stretched canvases any size range from 11x14 to 12x16
Canvas pad 11”x 14”
Large two-cup holder for medium / for acrylic painters, a couple of plastic jars/cups for water
Oil painters: Gamsol (pint), Silicoil Jar, or any wide mouth glass jar with lid, Linseed Oil smallest amount available/ metal double cup for medium -no lids needed.

Materials for cleaning brushes and PPE are the responsibility of the student.
Such items may include but are not limited to:
Shop towels for painting & cleanup
Safflower oil (for oil paint cleanup)
dish/brush soap
Glass containers for oil & solvent storage as well as brush cleaning
Aprons
Gloves
dustmasks /n95 masks
Eye protection
WSS provides a small amount of shared cleanup items for the Painting Room- 3A but it is much more efficient to bring and use you own.
