Great Women in the Arts: From the Renaissance to the Contemporary
This 10-week lecture series explores the lives, work, and lasting influence of great women artists from the Renaissance to present day, contemporary. Each week, we will examine the historical, cultural, and personal contexts that shaped these artists' careers while analyzing their unique artistic voices and contributions to the history of art.
Through engaging lectures, discussions, and close study of major works, students will discover how women artists challenged conventions, overcame barriers, and expanded the possibilities of artistic expression across painting, sculpture, photography, installation, performance, and mixed media, with a focus on understanding visual language.
Each 2.5 hour class combines an in-depth lecture with guided discussion and visual analysis, offering students a rich understanding of both the artists' techniques, personal lives, and the social movements that influenced their work.
This class requires students to participate in thoughtful, open discussion.
Final Project is to respond to a work or artist from the semester through a small work or written passage.
