Exploring Abstraction: Landscape as Source This 10-week course explores the idea of landscape as emotion, memory, texture, and atmosphere that will open our work to abstraction. Our sources will be nature, poetry, music, and anything that helps us move beyond we see and into what we feel. Ultimately this will move us toward a more responsive, evocative, and internal idea of landscape. The course will start with gathering (works on paper that are fast, loose, immediate) and move to a sustained series of paintings. Over the 10 weeks, we will:
• Develop an intuitive approach to abstract landscape
• Build confidence using mixed media and paint (student preference but will discuss oil and cold wax).
• Explore formal elements such as composition, color, texture, mark-making, and editing
• Learn to work in multiples
• Create a cohesive series of 3–6 abstract landscape paintings
