Master Copy Intensive with Francisco Galárraga

This four-session intensive explores the longstanding artistic practice of learning through master copies.
Beginning with an on-site visit to the National Gallery of Art, students will analyze selected paintings to better understand composition, color relationships, brushwork, and pictorial structure. Students will pencil sketch on location and choose one work they want to focus on for the rest of the course.
The remaining sessions will take place in the studio, where participants will create a focused copy of their chosen historical artworks while examining the technical and conceptual decisions that shaped them.
Through close observation and sustained practice, students will gain practical insights into painting techniques and artistic problem-solving across different periods and traditions.
