Independent Study at WSS
Independent Study is a series of mentorship sessions whereby an advanced student gets to work with their instructor of choice. Designed only for students who have demonstrated rigour and have begun developing a personal voice in their work, an Independent Study is meant to challenge and refine ideas, and help push them to completion. Students will choose a faculty mentor with whom they will work for 5 one-hour sessions over the course of ten weeks. This course is not open to everyone. Students must connect with the Administrative Coordinator who will connect with them with the faculty mentor. Only after approval from the faculty mentor and the Artistic Director can the student proceed with registration.
These meetings can occur at the school, in the student’s studio or at a museum.
For Foundation Certificate Students OR Regular Students:
Independent Study offers students a way of completing work that needs a more focused effort and understanding. Students can only take an Independent Study in special cases, with the approval of the Artistic Director. It is determined on a case-by-case basis. (ex: a certificate student needs to complete coursework and only has one class to go)...
Duration: 4 meetings, 2 hours, every other week, during any given term.
Location: TBD with instructor
For Master Certificate Students:
Independent Study is recommended ONLY for the final year of a Master Certificate, where students are developing their thesis. It is recommended that they work with 2 different instructors, one to advise and assist with their conceptual development and writing, and the other to help bring the body of work to completion.
Duration: 5 meetings, 1 hour each
Location: Certificate Student’s studio or on campus
