(Online) Introduction to Painting B with Martin Wall

Class | Registration opens 3/2/2026 12:00 AM EST

Introduction to Painting B is the second in a sequence of three Introduction to Painting classes. Building on skills learned in Introduction to Painting A, this class further pushes students’ understanding of composition and color. Students will continue working from observation (still life and landscape) and will further advance their study of mark making. In addition, this course will offer students an understanding of color and will implement a color-mixing method unique to the Washington Studio School. Students will also be exposed to art references, both historical and contemporary, as they will further one’s understanding of painting.

What you can expect:

  • Push knowledge and understanding of using oil paint.

  • Work from observation (still life).

  • Demonstrate knowledge of ala prima painting.

  • Create several paintings with compositions that demonstrate the elements of design and color.

  • Develop an understanding of mark-making.

Who is this class for: This class is for those who are looking to refresh their fundamental skills in seeing and painting before moving to the next level. Ideally, students taking level B will have taken level A prior, but can take this class nonetheless. IT IS STRONGLY recommended that students have some drawing experience before taking a painting class. All three courses must be completed for the Foundation Certificate Program.
