From the Audience's Perspective: Art Engagement as Self-Reflection with Ashleigh D. Coren

Class | Registration opens 3/2/2026 12:00 AM EST

This class is open to all levels and examines how art shapes, promotes, and validates stories and experiences within the larger context of cultural narratives through engagement. The course unpacks the relationship between identity and space, exploring how different cultural and social norms influence how audiences interpret and consume art. Drawing from art history, museum studies, and cultural studies, this class will be of particular interest to artists seeking to learn more about audience engagement and museum interpretation, as well as anyone interested in discussing how the public is trained to engage with and interpret different types of art—including photography, abstract work, narrative art, and historical portraiture. The class will involve a field trip, weekly discussions, reflective assignments, and a required final exhibition review that brings together the course's key objectives and themes.
