DC As We See It with Samantha Stover

Let’s draw and paint together as a community: experiencing Washington, DC from our own unique and varied perspectives. In this class, we will visit indoor and outdoor public spaces, tour museums and monuments, and explore the city’s attractions, landmarks and landscapes. Instruction combines art history, plein air, composition design, and urban sketching through a variety of site-specific exercises. There will be group feedback on our interpretations of the city and the development of our individual visual languages. We will meet in a different location each week (Art Museums, cafés, gardens, etc) to sketch people, architecture, art, plants, animals, and anything else that captures your attention!

The first class will take place at WSS, where you will learn to consolidate your all painting materials into a complete and compact kit. We will prepare sketchbooks for on-the-go oil painting, as well as for other dry & wet sketching options. You will learn valuable tips and tricks for packing and transporting wet oil paintings on a convenient, lightweight scale. We will also tube and label your most essential oil paints. Price of the class reflects the materials included in this special workshop event.

  • This class will be remote and take place in various indoor and outdoor areas of the city. The first class (April 13th) will be held at our WSS-Gallery to sketchbook prep (priming/gesso).

From Week 2, your instructor will communicate the weekly meeting places. After the initial meetup, there will be group exercises led by your instructor, or you can choose to work independently. The class will meet to share sketches in a casual group-critique format.

  • Your instructor has provided a list of materials required to participate fully in this class.

If you have any questions about specifics or what is needed week-to-week, please reach out to your instructor via the email in your confirmation letter.

    • Watercolor sketchbook (size of your choice) I use Hahnemühle watercolor A5 or A6 (dark grey cover) and Global Arts Materials Handbook Travelogue Watercolor book (natural linen cover, red flower = 200g paper, blue flower = 300g paper - I prefer the heavier paper *blue flower on cover).
    • 1/4” or 1/2” drafting tape, painters tape, artists tape (low tack) (tape width proportional for the size of your sketchbook)
    • Your most used Oil Paints (such as Earth colors)
    • Your Sketching materials of choice (appropriate to the location)
    • Spring clip(s)/ Binder clips
    • Personal items as needed (such as a Hat & SPF; Water bottle; Snack)
    • Consider carrying only a small shoulder tote – We will pre-research location-specific information on handbag allowance, checking bags, etc.
