This is an introductory course designed for students who have no prior experience with silkscreen printing, although experienced students seeking to experiment with new techniques will gain a lot from this course. Students will learn the entire analog (computer free) silkscreen process, including:
• Coating screens with photo-sensitive emulsion
• Designing artwork with hand-drawn transparencies, to “burn” a stencil with ultraviolet light.
• Printing ink onto paper by pushing it through the stencil with a rubber squeegee
• Overlapping and aligning multiple layers of color
• Ink cleanup and stencil removal (screen reclamation).
• Paper trimming and print finishing techniques.
Students will at minimum print an edition of ten 9x12” silkscreen prints with two layers of color of their own hand-drawn design over the course of this class. This course is an excellent layer in learning how to construct an image across mediums and expanding students' repertoire in 2D work.
