Future Ruin: Sculpture with Lauren Crawford

Class | Registration opens 3/2/2026 12:00 AM EST

This course examines the tension between ruins and future visions. How sculpture can embody entropy, repair, and speculative rebuilding through surface treatment and form. Students will work with high-density foam to safely and effectively construct three-dimensional structures. Through carving, sanding, and the application of layered finishes, we will investigate how to communicate narratives of decay, preservation, and projection. Emphasis is placed on material testing, controlled failure, and the relationship between structural integrity and visual meaning. The course balances technical skill-building with conceptual inquiry, encouraging students to treat surface not as decoration, but as an active site where history, labor, and intention become legible in building three-dimensional objects and installations.
