Introduction to Drawing B with Marie Gauthiez

Class | Registration opens 3/2/2026 12:00 AM EST

This is an introductory course designed for beginners who have had minimal experience with drawing. This class is the second in three introductory classes. While it covers basic techniques and vocabulary, it also builds on the first introductory class. Students will practice a range of exercises which will arm them with the necessary knowledge to take drawing a step further and make it more personal. Process as a means not to an end but as an end itself will be a basis by which this class is taught.

Individual as well as group critiques and discussions will be conducted. By the end of this class and after serious completion of class work and assignments, students should be able to have an expanded drawing vocabulary, strong technical ability which would enable them to proceed to the next level of drawing.

Who this class is for:

Introduction to Drawing, A, B, & C each build on each other conceptually and will cover Line, Negative Shape, Value, Sighting and Perspective the first five weeks. Students with no prior experience or with advanced drawing skills are able to register for this class.Exercises are designed to accommodate a range of students, from beginners to more experienced students. All three classes are required to fulfill the Foundation Certificate Program requirements. However, they can be taken interchangeably, in any order, as their schedules permit.

  • About my approach:
Teaching is an important part of my own practice. I once was a student at WSS too, eager to grow. I was shaped by the nurturing relationships and exciting knowledge I developed there. I have been teaching at WSS since 2023. I am interested in guiding students, no matter their current level. I believe that rigor, humor and experimentation will lead to the longevity of their practice. Our biggest enemy at this stage: perfectionism. Mistakes and accidents have their place in the trajectory. What makes a difference is our willingness to reassess, to erase, to push through when it gets hard, to deeply learn how to see, to deconstruct and build back up. I enthusiastically follow the WSS foundation curriculum which I supplement with prompts and assignments I design. I want students to feel proud of their achievements, to commit to the class and its demands (presence, energy, shared experience, homework) and to relish the discoveries along the way.
