Gouache Part II: Technique, Color, and Pattern in Design with Pooja Campbell

Students will explore the unique properties of gouache while developing their skills in color, pattern, and design. Through the study of historical and contemporary artists and art movements, each project introduces new approaches to illustration, pattern-making, and surface design. Emphasis is placed on experimentation, observation, and the application of design. PLEASE NOTE: This is Part 2 of the gouache course. Part 1 is a prerequisite to participating.

- Gouache: 6 primary, permanent white, cyan, magenta, cad red deep (Winsor Newton or Holbein)
- Synthetic paint brushes for watercolor or gouache
- Masterson paint cups with lids (0.5)
- Palette Paper
- Bristol Paper Pad (9x12) or cold pressed watercolor paper
- Pencil
- Erasers
- Ruler
- Color pencils
- Compass
- Masking tape
- Tracing sheets
- Paper towels
- Sketch book

Materials for cleaning brushes and PPE are the responsibility of the student.
Such items may include but are not limited to:
Shop towels for painting & cleanup
Safflower oil (for oil paint cleanup)
dish/brush soap
Glass containers for oil & solvent storage as well as brush cleaning
Aprons
Gloves
dustmasks /n95 masks
Eye protection
WSS provides a small amount of shared cleanup items for the Painting Room- 3A but it is much more efficient to bring and use you own.
Pooja Campbell
Pooja Campbell is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in Chantilly, VA. Born and raised in India, her work chronicles everyday moments in her children’s lives through the perspective of an Indian-American mother raising first-generation Americans. Campbell began her art education in Bangalore, India, and later studied textile design in Cape Town, South Africa. She holds an MFA from American University in Washington,DC, and a BFA from Montserrat College of Art in Massachusetts. Campbell’s select exhibitions include Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VA), University of Mary Washington Galleries (VA), New York Academy of Art (NY), Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (VA), Boston International Fine Art Show (MA), and Center for Contemporary Art (NJ). Campbell received the Ruth Meixner-Bird Award and the Wolpoff Award in 2024, as well as the Purchase Award from the University of Mary Washington Galleries in 2025. She is a 2024-25 Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Graduate Fellowship Recipient.
