Intermediate Drawing with Mary Freedman

Intermediate Drawing will build on the concepts and skills explored in the Washington Studio School's three Introductory Drawing courses, focusing on uniting them to develop drawing structure as well as personal vision. In particular, the course will reinforce the use of line, shape, value and texture to create plastic space by exploring the principles of design, compositional strategies and interpretive perception. Through observational drawing - translating three-dimensional space to a two-dimensional surface - the course will address the potential of abstract design and mark-making as a means of personal expression. Students will use a variety of mediums, concentrating on drawing as a process and not a product.
PREREQUISITE: The Washington Studio School's three Introductory Drawing courses or similar experience providing students with knowledge of how to use line, shape, value and texture to draw representationally from observation.

- 18" x 24" pad of newsprint
- 2B, 4B, 6B graphite pencils

- box of willow vine charcoal
- soft compressed charcoal (three sticks)
- one stick each of black, sanguine, and white conte crayon
- small bottle of sumi ink

Mary Freedman
Mary Freedman works with various drawing media, focusing on Still Life, Plant Life, and the Figure. She internalizes her subjects to create work that reflects both their essence and her own sentiment. Freedman received a BA in Art History from Pennsylvania State University and a Certificate of Achievement from Washington Studio School, joining the WSS faculty in 2009. She previously worked at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and has volunteered as an art instructor in D.C. for 21 years. Her work has been exhibited in numerous group shows across the DC and Baltimore area, including a solo show at Washington Studio School.
