The Collaged World: Research, Reassembly and New Meaning with Marie B. Gauthiez

Class | Registration opens 11/19/2025 12:00 AM EST

The 10-week class is an exploration of collage as both a dynamic visual technique and a powerful conceptual tool. This class moves beyond cutting and pasting to use collage as a profound metaphor for investigating our contemporary world.

Students will look into the history of collage and its current applications, focusing on the works of contemporary artists who use fragmentation and reassembly as methods of self-expression. Through personal research and investigation, students will be asked to look at the world around them—its cultural, political, and personal fragments—and remix them into new, impactful meanings.

Objectives:
-Historical Context: Gain an understanding of collage history and how contemporary artists are using it today.
-Creative Techniques: Learn and practice diverse methods, including techniques that incorporate simple printmaking, image transfers, and 3D forms.
-Conceptual approach: Uncover or refine topics that drive your practice, find personal images or vernacular images through digital and in-person research to build a collection of references. Use the materiality and composition of your work as a method for social or personal inquiry.
