The Emotive Figure with Jill Bateman

The figure is not separate from its environment, just as we are not separate from our world, but is instead visually and conceptually embedded in its surroundings. How can we draw so that the figure and the space around it breathe together? How can we intentionally create an environment that conveys our chosen emotive and/or narrative intent, whether observed, invented, abstract, or psychological? And how can we deepen our understanding of plasticity, drawing what is felt rather than just describing what is seen?
Working from the model, students will begin the term by harnessing the power of line, shape, value, volume, space, and texture as they challenge themselves to push the environmental narrative in a more personal direction, exploring the intersection of observation and imagination. We will discuss the role of symbolism in art history, encouraging students to reflect on how they might add layers of deeper meaning into their own work. How can line quality suggest compassion, doubt, or strength? Can gesture or placement express vulnerability or transcendence? How might omission - leaving out detail - become symbolic of loss or memory? And how can collage elements convey emotive intent? The concept of “magical prostheses” will be introduced, inviting students to question what imaginative, symbolic, or transformative elements could be added to the body to suggest power, fantasy, personal history or vulnerability.
