The Unconventional Portrait in Colored Pencil with Sarah Jamison

Class | Registration opens 11/19/2025 12:00 AM EST

The Unconventional Portrait in Colored Pencil combines technical rendering in colored pencil and the self as subject. Using a flatbed scanner to take several self-scans, students will dissect, cut, weave and reassemble their printed portraits to be used as their drawing reference. Students will be asked to consider movement, abstraction, and complexity in their reworked portraits.

Students can expect to create one drawn portrait (the scale is determined by the paper purchased. Stonehenge paper is recommended) and learn colored pencil technique. Additionally, students can expect lively discussion about portraiture, weekly conversations regarding art philosophy, and to participate in a final critique of their work.

  • Classes will be held on Federal Holidays unless otherwise communicated by your instructor.

  • Your instructor has provided a list of materials required to participate fully in this class.
