Compositional Diagrams Workshop 6/18 with Paul Pietsch

Workshop | Available

This three-hour workshop will introduce students to the benefits and tactics of diagramming compositions. Looking to Erle Loran’s Cézannes Composition and Edgar Payne’s Composition of Outdoor Painting as inspirations, the workshop will begin with a discussion of what compositional diagrams are and how they can be used before focusing on specific diagrammatic and compositional techniques. Students will have the opportunity to diagram reproductions of well-known pieces of art as well as reproductions of their own work. They will share and discuss their diagrams as a class. The goal of the workshop is to help students better understand and interpret painting structures, thereby enabling them to strengthen their compositions through preparatory drawings and mid-painting revisions.
