Ways of Seeing with Paul Pietsch

Short Class | Available

Through a mixture of assigned readings, group discussions and studio assignments, this six-week course will help students understand and apply different strategies for conceiving of and building pictorial space. In particular, the course will dedicate two weeks each to (1) perceptual strategies, (2) constructive strategies, and (3) subjective strategies. Based on reading assigned texts prior to each class, students will discuss how the pictorial strategies relate or could relate to their work before undertaking assignments to apply them. The course will focus more on conceptual approaches to painting and drawing than on the technical skills of the media they use. Students may work in whatever painting and/or drawing media they choose.

  • Materials List - These are the materials you will need to bring with you for this class.
    Media

    • If painting, students need colors, brushes, a palette, solvent and a shatter-proof container for solvent.

    • If drawing, students may use whichever drawing media they choose and should bring at least one kneaded eraser.

    Surfaces

    • If painting in oil or acrylic, students need 5 stretched canvases, wood panels or pieces of watercolor paper, all prepared with a primer and gesso or with just gesso. Painting surfaces should be 16” x 20” or larger. (Students using pre-stretched, pre-primed canvases should add a layer of gesso to them.)

    • If painting in watercolor or gouache, students need 1 block of 9” x 12” or larger (140 lb.) cold press watercolor paper OR 1 sheet of 22” x 30” (140 lb.) cold press watercolor paper. (Recommended brand is Arches. Avoid cheap paper…it is not worth it.)

    • If drawing, students need at least 5 sheets of paper (70lbs. or heavier) that are each 16” x 20” or larger.
