Washington As We See It: Sketching and Painting on Location with Samantha Stover

Class | Available

Let’s draw and paint together as a community, observing and recording Washington, DC from
our own unique and varied perspectives. In this class, we will visit indoor and outdoor public
spaces, tour museums and monuments, and explore the city’s attractions, landmarks and
landscapes. Instruction combines art history, figure drawing, plein air, composition design, and
urban sketching, with group feedback on our interpretations of the city and the development of
our individual visual languages. We will meet in a different location each week (Art Museums,
cafés, gardens, etc) to sketch people, architecture, art, plants, animals, and anything else that
captures your attention!

The first class will take place at WSS, where you will learn to consolidate your all painting
materials into a complete and compact kit. We will prepare sketchbooks for on-the-go oil
painting, as well as for other dry & wet sketching options. You will learn valuable tips and tricks
for packing and transporting wet oil paintings on a convenient, lightweight scale. We will also
tube and label your most essential oil paints. The price of the class reflects the materials included in
this special workshop event.

From Week 2, your instructor will communicate the weekly meeting places. After initial meetup,
there will be group exercises led by your instructor, or you can choose to work independently.
We will meet back to share our sketches in a casual group-critique format.

Samantha Stover

Samantha Stover grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Literature and Art History from McGill University and a Masters in Fine Art, cum laude, from the New York Academy of Art. Throughout her academic studies in art, she focused her concentration on Drawing Techniques: historical methods and materials as well as figure-drawing exclusively from life. She learned painting, predominantly, as a copyist in New York and Washington, DC and she has traveled widely through Europe studying master drawings and paintings. Her current work involves figuration and the power of creative expression. Drawing also on her previous experience as a theatrical costume designer, she is influenced by the performative and communicative capacity of the human form and spirit. She employs the practices of her traditional training and her experience with the figure in motion to capture fleeting observations, emotions and memories.
