Colored Pencil, Portraiture, and Beyond is a class that pushes the boundaries of traditional drawing. Students can expect to learn colored pencil technique and to develop and utilize traditional rendering skills. The class begins by creating compositions using collage methods – this collage is then used as a reference image for the final drawings. Students should bring an image or images they would like to use for a portrait. Additionally, this course will delve into finding and curating inspiration and discuss philosophies of artmaking and culture.

What you can expect:

  • Push knowledge and understanding of colored pencil

  • Work from a self-created reference image

  • Create a minimum of one finished artwork

  • Explore new methods and materials

  • Materials List - These are the materials you will need to bring with you for this class.

    • Prismacolor Pencils (This link is for the set of 72 which is the minimum amount I ask students to purchase. There are sets up to 150 pencils, but that is a bit of an investment at $100+)

    • Stonehenge Paper Pad of 9" x 12" paper

    • Kneaded Eraser

    • Pink Pearl or similar "regular" eraser

    • Old magazines to cut and collage

    • Scissors (x-acto knife nice but optional)

    • Photograph to use for portrait

    • Pencils (a few graphite pencils)

    • Blue Tape

    • Glue Sticks
