a. WS23 - More than Just a Pretty Picture
One-Day Workshop | Registration opens 1/19/2026 12:00 PM EST
Jeanne is well known for her ability to push beyond the reference material. Our references are just the beginning of the story. If you are looking to push beyond your photos and create bolder, stronger paintings, join Jeanne to discover more clarity in your inspiration, to draw on your references with more intention and create stronger work.
NOTE FOR ALL IAPS WORKSHOPS: You must bring your own portable easel, and a board to support your paper. The room will be set with chairs which can be moved around to suit your preference. You can stand at an easel and use the table for your supplies, or you can bring a table easel and sit to work. Rubbing Alcohol will be provided for the students' use.
IMPORTANT: Please bring a plastic or cloth sheet to place under your easel, or table, to protect the hotel's carpet.
Supply List
Do you find yourself creating paintings that copy your photos, but leave you (or your viewers) flat? Our references are just the beginning of the story. Let’s push beyond the photos and create bolder, stronger paintings, discover more clarity in our inspiration, and draw on our references with more intention. Then, we’ll look at how to build on those inspirations to create stronger work.
Photo references:
Our aim in this day-long workshop will be in using your photo references as a starting point to develop your focus to create more powerful work. You must bring your own photos for this workshop. Please bring at least 2-4 pre-chosen photo references which you’d be interested in working with. From there we can make choices and decisions. Format: I work from my ipad, which is easy to edit from and crop. You can also bring prints. Note: Phones are the least appealing option as their size makes them difficult to paint from.
Pastels & Paper: Since the focus of this workshop is on clarifying your intention and painting plan, we’ll spend extra time on planning and composition. Painting size should be small (eg 9x12 to 12x16) and on any paper of your choice (I like Uart and PastelMat, but there are so many great papers, choose what you like). Pastels: For every workshop and plein air session I travel to, I use the same box (Mine is a Heilman backpack size). It is filled with a full range of colors and values, including neutrals, and a variety of hard and soft pastels. Bring a variety of colors and values but be sure to also bring the sketching supplies below:
Other supplies:
Small grey or brown sketch pad (such as Strathmore) for thumbnail sketches and notes
Both black and white charcoal pencils
Painting support (foam board is my favorite) with clips or tape to attach your painting
Your easel, either standing or table.
old beach towel or tarp for catching dust and falling pastels
Optional: rubber color shaper, fan brush, other assorted dry brushes for blending
Optional: (if underpainting) An old, 1/2” to 1” flat or large round watercolor brush
Optional: (if underpainting) small plastic cup & 70% isopropyl alcohol (I will bring extra)
