Sergei Pietila - The Structure of Landscape

Sergei is an internationally known artist who has traveled the world to share his unique and creative approach to creating the structure of a landscape. He will work with you to achieve the understanding of how to creatively build the space in a landscape and paint a strong, bold work of art.

  • NOTE FOR ALL IAPS WORKSHOPS: You must bring your own portable easel, and a board to support your paper. The room will be set with chairs which can be moved around to suit your preference. You can stand at an easel and use the table for your supplies, or you can bring a table easel and sit to work. Rubbing Alcohol will be provided for the students' use.
IMPORTANT: Please bring a plastic or cloth sheet to place under your easel, or table, to protect the hotel's carpet.

    Working on Light, Neutral-Tone Paper

In this session, we’ll explore the structure of a landscape and create a finished piece. Please prepare the following required materials:

Landscape reference photos — at least 5. We’ll choose the most suitable ones for the assignment.

Light, neutral gray-tone paper (not white) from a brand you’re comfortable with, at least 15 inches on the long side. Bring 3 sheets in different shades.

A set of soft pastels from your usual brand.

    Drawing charcoal — required.

Additional tools: a 2-inch natural-bristle hake or paintbrush, a small bristle brush, kneaded and regular erasers, and wet wipes for your hands.
