One-Day Workshop | FULL

Truman Hosner - Inserting a Figure into a Landscape

Working from photo references, Truman will help you understand the essential elements he has gleaned from his successful painting career. He will teach a natural way to insert a figure into the landscape, and share his techniques for using light, shadow, and temperature to show how to develop fast, natural approaches to working with the figure in an environment.

  • NOTE FOR ALL IAPS WORKSHOPS: You must bring your own portable easel, and a board to support your paper. The room will be set with chairs which can be moved around to suit your preference. You can stand at an easel and use the table for your supplies, or you can bring a table easel and sit to work. Rubbing Alcohol will be provided for the students' use.

    IMPORTANT:
Please bring a plastic or cloth sheet to place under your easel, or table, to protect the hotel's carpet.

    Suggested Materials List

Art materials are as personal to an artist as the make of a musical instrument is to a musician.

I make suggestions only. I recommend you choose the brands you are most comfortable with.

You will find all the materials on the internet by brand, or through your favorite art supply store.

The type of pastel you use is secondary to the importance of what you do with the pastels you have.

I use the same pastels for figurative and landscape works. I group by color and value range (lighter to darker). Like the keys on a piano, they are always in the same place in my pastel box.

    Pastels List

    1. Bring at least 150 colors – The brands I use are Rembrandt, Sennelier, Unison,

        Ludwig, and a few Nu-Pastel

    2. Include these Key Colors if at all possible: Sennelier: 045, 484, 483, 482,

        480, 479 / Rembrandt: 411.3, 409.3, .5, .7, 538.3, 235.2, 408.3 / Ludwig: V100, V520, N120,

        R170, R242, R 590

    3. 6 earth tone pastel pencils, with a way to sharpen them

    Setup:

    4. A lightweight portable table to hold your pastels for when we are working open-air

    5. An outdoor easel: I use a “Take-It Easel” https://www.takeiteasel.com

    6. A shelf to act as a holding place for the pastels you are using to make your painting

    Paper and Panel:

    7. We work 16x20 or 12x16 – Try to bring your paper as pre-mounted sanded panels.

    8. I use Lux Archival - 140 lb/300 gsm white sanded paper or Pastel Premier White - 600 Grit

    9. I mount the paper onto adhesive gator board panels which I purchase from:

         Artgrafix - http://www.artgrafix.net/gator.htm

    10. Bring a backing board (1/4” Masonite or Particle Board) 2” all-around larger than the paper

size you intend to work with. If you choose to do what I do, you’ll need metal clips and screws

from a hardware store to clip your panel to the backing board

    Miscellaneous:

    11. Large Kneaded Eraser + White Artists' Eraser

    12. Artist's tape

    13. Paper towels (Viva) + Hand wipes

    14. A handheld mirror. This is to check your painting for proportions and accuracy of value

    15. A 5x7 sketchbook + 3, 9B Pencils + Sanding Block

    16. Painter's umbrella for direct-sun painting - only when working open-air.

    17. Backpack to carry items

    18. Figure Workshops Only: a Carpenters Plumb with Line for when working from life. This is for

          establishing a centerline for figures

Bring Photo Reference to Work From

They must be your own photos, not published photos.
