Mixed media
We will be underpainting on sanded and unsanded pastel papers and (Instructor provided) miscellaneous substrates. You will need:
Inexpensive 1” and 2” wide water media brushes to lay in paint washes and inks — and 1” and 2” wide old bristle brushes. Sanded pastel papers can wear down good brushes.
Mixing palette paper or a disposable waterproof surface, such as a plastic plate or saucer.
Water container or small jars.
Watercolor, acrylic, orgouache assortment, i.e.,quinacridone red, cadmium yellow light, ultramarine blue, payne’s grey, burnt umber, cadmium red light, cadmium yellow deep, prussian blue, and large titanium white for tinting. White is a must, and bring 6-8 colors in one medium or mix and match. These paint mediums are compatible with one another.
Additionally, we will block in shapes and textures with hard and medium pastels and dissolve the pastel strokes with an alcohol-based product, such as rubbing alcohol (provided by IAPS) or Spectrafix concentrate (provided by the instructor), using a brush and a small jar or container to hold the alcohol.
*Instructor provides inks and a multitude of exciting mixed media paint materials and tools.
Adventurous drawing prompts and shape-finding exercises will engage your inner vision and imagination.
