NOTE FOR ALL IAPS WORKSHOPS: You must bring your own portable easel, and a board to support your paper. The room will be set with chairs which can be moved around to suit your preference. You can stand at an easel and use the table for your supplies, or you can bring a table easel and sit to work. Rubbing Alcohol will be provided for the students' use.
IMPORTANT: Please bring a plastic or cloth sheet to place under your easel, or table, to protect the hotel's carpet.
MATERIALS LIST:
PASTELS: (no need to go out to purchase sets....bring what you have)
Hard pastels - small box (Cretacolor, Faber-Castell, or similar)
Medium pastels -small box (Rembrandt or similar) (Rembrandt great as a basic starter set if you are new to pastels; some companies sell half stick to try out new pastels)
Very soft pastels – small box ((Ludwig, Great American. Schmincke, or similar)
Pastel pencils -2 varied dark tones (Derwent, Carbo-Othello, Conte a Paris, Faber Castell/Pitt, Bruynzeel or similar)
PAPER: 2 sheets LUXARCHIVAL PASTEL PAPER (8x10, 11x14, or larger); maybe a few extra for more experimentation
MISC:
Small handheld mirror/makeup (not magnifying) Newsprint strips for recomposing/cropping (cut to 1-2”wide, length of paper) 2-3 Cheap or old hardware store brush (2-3” wide) for toning Shallow box to hold pastels you are using, with paper towel or foam to lay pastels on
Small sketchbook for thumbnail studies
Pencils, charcoal, gray markers (3 values) or any quick media for study
Kneaded eraser Masking Tape
Boards (foam core) as a support board to hold paper (slightly larger than paper) Small yogurt cups/baby food jars
OPTIONAL:
Cheap hardware store or used brush to brush off pastel; Small old fan brush (if you already have one)
Mat knife or double edge blade to sharpen pastel pencils
Paper towels or Aluminum foil strip (to hold falling pastel from easel) Single edge razor – sharpening pastel pencils Feather duster (to dust off dirty pastels) – I cut off a clump and tape it together for travel Glassine or small strips of foam core (1/2-1”x 2” approx.) –for travel to separate drawings Paper towels/Wet wipes for cleaning hands
Small plastic bag to hang from easel for trash
Old toothbrush to clean nails/fingers Barrier Cream (Kerodex 51 or similar) for hands
