No auditions or scripts here!  In Playbill'd, students' ideas take center stage in this class that focuses on teaching young actors the basics of scene building and improvisation!  What is the play about?  Who will play which part?  That is up to the young people who take this class.  Led by a professional teaching artist, this class focuses on giving young people the tools and power to create theater of their own design.
In the fall semester, students learn the building blocks of theater and performance through games and improvisation.  They will practice cooperation, courage and making big choices.  In the spring semester, they will build an original performance together. They will stretch their creativity and learn performance skills that give them confidence to perform in this class, and beyond. The class will perform at the end of each semester for friends and family.

  • Each day children will meet in the Greenwich House Theatre at 27 Barrow Street to play games that teach them skills in performance, improv and storytelling. In the first week they will work in small groups to come up with ideas for the performance and teaching artists will help to bring these ideas to life. In the final week, children will choose what scenes and ideas they want to share and work toward the final performance.
  • Over the course of the two weeks, children will learn how to think critically about the messages we create, receive, and put out into the world. They will learn how to give and receive feedback that is constructive and supportive, and they will build in-person relationships in a structured and creative environment that fosters social and emotional learning.
